Pulp Fiction opening sequence analysis

Opening sequence of Pulp Fiction shows a close up of the woman in the diner serving coffee to Hunnie Bunnie this shows us a friendly facial expressions towards the couple. A medium shot of Hunnie Bunnie getting served with coffee in this part of the opening sequence we see that the couple are casually getting along with their normal routine. We also have a shot reverse shot in this sequence as we see the continuity of the conversation and which place there going to rob, this particular part in the sequence is very important indeed as they are both talking about it as if it is normal to them and not being aware of people around then when planning there robery.
In the editing of the sequence we see a slow zoom in when the man is telling Hunnie Bunnie about robbing licker stores the situation they would be in and the risk that is involved. This slow zoom in gives us the impression that he’s bringing Hunnie Bunnie back to reality acting all serious about the situation they could be in. Zoom out after Hunnie Bunnie and her boyfriend kiss this suggests that the fast paced zoom out represents the fast paced action which occurs afterwards.
The direct mode of address in the opening sequence when Hunnie Bunnies boyfriend is talking about robbing restaurant. He is very direct indeed and knows what he wants, his character comes across as being methodical and logical about tackiling the situation at hand. When they are both talking to each other we hear asynchronise sound of a piano music in the background but this is overshadowed by the dialouge in the scene.
The mise en scne in the scene the classic stereotypical diner props such as coffee mugs, sugar, spoons and the american diner layout. The lighting in the scene is very bright but seeps out of the blinds by partly obscuring the actors faces with shadows in the scene. Also cigarrete smoking seems to be maditory in this scene making all the above relevant to a classic film noir as generic convensions are shown throughout the sequence.
